- Students will be exposed to different clock types and understand how to identify an analog clock.
- Students will understand the functions of the clock's hour and minute hands.
- Students will understand how to estimate the time on an analog clock using only the hour hand.
Misconceptions
- Teaching students how to first estimate time using only the hour hand will help students to understand what the hour hand is really showing and ward off common misconceptions of incorrect hour readings.
Around the Clock! Activities . . .
Let's Partner up!
Twelve student groups were formed by randomly (I used a can with name sticks) handing out clock necklaces showing o'clock times. Students had to find their group members by matching the times on their necklaces (1 o'clocks, 2 o'clocks, . . .12 o'clocks).
Analog clock or not?
Each group was given a card with a picture of a clock. Their task was to quietly discuss and place the card on the felt board under "analog clock" or "other clock type." If there was disagreement, we reviewed the sorting criteria . . . Does the clock have hands? Are there 12 hours marked? Is the clock face round?
The Human Clock . . .
